Troy Vincent: NFL Needs to 'Revisit' Onside Kick After Rule Change for 2024 Season
October 15, 2024
NFL teams now have to declare when they are attempting an onside kick following the kickoff rule changes for the 2024 season, but that might not be the case in the future.
Troy Vincent, who is the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, told reporters Tuesday that "we need to revisit" the onside kick rule with no more surprises in play.
However, he also said there are not expected to be any changes to the kickoff rule during the 2024 campaign.
The new kickoff rules were put in place with the hope of reducing injuries and increasing the number of actual returns. Drives start on the 30-yard line after a touchback, while every member of the kicking team except the kicker lines up on the opponent's 40-yard line.
The return team can have two players in the landing zone to field the kickoff, while the rest are in the setup zone between their own 30- and 35-yard line. Players outside the kicker and returners in the landing zone are not allowed to move until the ball touches the ground or one of the returners.
While Vincent would like to see changes to the onside kick rule to reintroduce that play to the NFL, he said he is pleased with the overall changes and highlighted a 90 percent increase in kickoff returns through the first six weeks compared to this point of the 2023 campaign.
Don't expect major changes to the rule moving forward, but the onside kick situation could look different in 2025.
