Roman Reigns Discusses Cancer Treatment, Possible WWE Retirement in A&E Documentary
April 1, 2024
Roman Reigns isn't just defending the Universal championship at WrestleMania. He's apparently putting his career on the line as well.
The Head of the Table said he plans on leaving WWE once his title reign is over during an A&E documentary that aired Sunday.
"You guys better cherish these moments, 'cause once I lose the WWE Undisputed championship, I'm calling it quits," Reigns said.
Of course, it's fair to note Reigns was likely working in that comment. It would be a major shock for him to walk away at the height of his career at age 38, even with a loss to Cody Rhodes next weekend in Philadelphia.
It's far more likely that Reigns will take an extended break post-WrestleMania if Rhodes finishes his story, potentially taking time to revamp his character after a fall from grace.
With that said, Reigns' goals outside the ring are a little different than most wrestlers his age. Reigns revealed he continues to take medication for leukemia, which he was first diagnosed with in 2007 and then suffered a recurrence in 2018.
"For leukemia, if you caught it in an early stage like I did, you're able to take a medication, a very important medication, that I am still on to this day," Reigns said in the doc.
Paul Heyman recently revealed Reigns considered himself retired early in the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I was executive director of Monday Night Raw, and Roman was assigned to SmackDown. But every week I heard all the SmackDown writers and producers and personnel saying, 'God, I just wish Roman would come back.' And I would ask, has anybody talked to him? Yeah, he says he's retired. He's not coming back. No way. Thanks a lot. Done. Finished. Goodbye. So the fact that he came back for this run, for what we have accomplished, is nothing short of a miracle because as far as he was concerned, he was out," Heyman told Raj Prashad of Uproxx Sports.
If Reigns does ultimately walk away after WrestleMania, he'll be doing so coming off the most impressive title reign of the modern era. If there's any way to go out, this certainly feels like it.
